PreK-12 Religion Curriculum Goal for the
Diocese of Grand Rapids
The learner will study the Catholic faith and be able to apply these beliefs in their actions through various service, prayer, and decision making opportunities.
Grade Level Goals:
Preschool: The focus of the 3 year old curriculum is to learn about God and how much God loves me. The focus of the 4 year old curriculum is to learn how to show my love for God, for God’s family, and for God’s creation.
Kindergarten: The Kindergarten learners will recognize that they are members of God’s family. As members of God’s family, they are responsible for their own actions, learning the faith, and praying faithfully.
First Grade: The first grade learners will identify themselves as members of the Catholic family through Baptism. They will describe and practice how the church family prays, worships, and serves others.
Second Grade: Through the study of the Gospel, Catholic Tradition, the learner will be prepared to receive the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist.
Third Grade: The learner will describe what they believe as Catholics through the creeds. They will learn, celebrate, share, and live their Catholic faith within their community.
Fourth Grade: The learner will use the rules given by God and the Church to develop a sense of morality and conscience.
Fifth Grade: The learners will examine their Catholic faith through the seven sacraments as they learn to live their faith and apply it within their lives.
Sixth Grade: The learner will have a deeper understanding of the roots of our faith by studying the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures.
Seventh Grade: The learner will have a deeper understanding of the living truths of their faith through the Christian Scriptures.
Eighth Grade: The learner will have a deeper understanding of the role of the Holy Spirit in the formation of the Church in preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation.
